The purpose of this study was to analyze the staff board of the position of executive assistant, suited to the needs of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), in the context of competency management. The research included data collection in documents, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews with a predominantly qualitative approach. The results, obtained from content analysis, pointed out as opportune the adoption of competency management in the Institution since it developed the personnel planning based on the demands presented by the units. As a matter of priority, executive assistants must be allocated in sectors considered 'key units', relevant to increasing the number of executive assistants at UFSC. Given the findings and what recommends competency management, the study proposes actions to improve the management of executive assistants, considering facts such as the inhibition of public examinations and position filling and the creation of a workforce dimensioning commission at the Institution.
